Finding Rhythm in the First 100 Days

"The first 100 days" is a well-known benchmark, often used to evaluate a U.S. president’s early performance in office. These first months can set the tone for an entire term, filled with executive appointments, executive orders, and legislative priorities.
A pastor’s first 100 days can feel just as pivotal. While many church leadership experts suggest avoiding major changes during the first six months, those early days are still packed with activity.
At the time of writing, I’m 54 days into my tenure as senior pastor, and people often ask, “How’s it going?”
My honest response? “I don’t feel like I have any kind of rhythm yet.”
Some laugh, saying, “That’s just life as a pastor!” Others, including myself, recognize it’s been a whirlwind:
Clarifying the correct version of our church’s constitution
My wife’s grandmother passing away
Trying to find a CrossFit gym
Wrapping up Upward Basketball and officiating for the Virginia High School League
Office renovations (paint, furniture, lights, and ceiling)
Substitute teaching more than expected
Meeting with prospective members
A youth fundraiser banquet
My first funeral as senior pastor
Sound like a lot? It feels like it.
Is it the life of a pastor? Absolutely.
Yet, despite all of this, I still haven’t found my rhythm. I feel scattered.
In the middle of it all, Matthew 6:11 came to mind:
“Give us this day our daily bread.”
I love this reminder from Jesus. In the Sermon on the Mount, He teaches His disciples how to pray. But He’s also calling back to when the Israelites wandered in the desert. God provided manna, instructing them to gather only what they needed for that one day.
A far cry from the bulk shopping culture of Costco and Sam’s Club.
I’ve realized something: I need Jesus to establish my rhythm. When I align with Him, everything else falls into place. He is my rock, fortress, shield, and—most importantly—my daily bread. If I feel out of sync, maybe it's because I’ve lost step with Him.
Let’s seek Him daily. He is our source of strength, our sustainer, and our guide. Find Him, and you’ll find the rhythm you truly need.
Anyway, I was just thinking…
